今や、シングルプレイヤーゲームですらも、ソーシャル要素が重要な時代になっています。そして私達は、ソーシャル要素は必要不可欠なものであると考えています。
私は、ゲームプラットフォームにはゲームで遊ぶ人々のソーシャルグラフ（※SNSなどにおけるユーザー同士の繋がり）を構築することが必要と考えています。これは、任天堂がMiiverseを提案した大きな理由となっています。
ゲーミングサービスに目を向けてみると、例えばXboxLiveのように異なる場所にいるユーザー同士が集まって遊べるようなサービスは、現在では普遍的なものになりました。
しかし、フレンド同士が常に同じ時間に集まって遊べるとは限りません。もちろん、マルチプレイヤーゲームのようにお互いが集まって遊ぶような場もMiiverseにはありますが、私達が本当にやりたいことは、1人で遊んでいるプレイヤーが、1人で遊んでいることを感じさせないような場を提供することです。

Miiverseには、例えばゲームを遊んでいて何か行き詰まった時に、ヒントを探したり、フレンドとビデオチャットをしたりすることが出来ます。これらの機能については、ニンテンドーダイレクト Pre E3 2012などで紹介されています。
1人でゲームを遊んでいる人への救済策については、以前から様々な方法でゲームに取り入れられ試行錯誤が続けられていましたが、Wii UとMiiverseはそれらに対する任天堂の答えということになりそうです。
