印刷用ページ 任天堂がハードディスクドライブ（HDD）にWiiソフトをインストールする技術を特許申請していた事が明らかになりました。
海外のゲーム情報サイトSiliconeraの記事によると、この技術ではHDDをゲーム毎にパーティションを切ってデータを保存し、それを仮想のDVDドライブとして認識させる事でゲームを起動可能にしているとのこと。
プレイヤーは、専用のメニュー画面に表示されたパッケージ画像からゲームを選択できるようになっています。また、北米のレーティング機関であるESRBの評価を表示できるほか、ペアレンタルコントロールも動作します。
しかし任天堂は、ゲーム機にHDDなどの壊れやすい部品を使用することに否定的である事から、この技術が実際に使われるかどうかは不明です。また、Nintendo Lifeの記事によると、この技術は小売店やイベントなどで試遊用のWii本体を設置するために使われるものではないかという情報もあるようです。

- 日本では2008年初旬ごろから一部店舗でWiiの試遊台が設置され始めましたが、これにこの技術が使われていると思います。
結構な種類の体験版が入っていて、なおかつそれらがメニュー画面からシームレスに切り替わるので、何らかの大容量ストレージが搭載されているのは間違いないでしょう。
昔は体験版ディスクを店舗側で交換していましたが、このWiiの試遊台はインターネット回線を使って内容が定期的に自動更新されるので、内容の書き換えが可能なHDDを使用している可能性が高いと思います。 - 2010/07/08 PM05:36
