海外メディアIGNのインタビューに応じた桜井氏は、最新作について「方向性を少し変えるつもりです」とコメントしました。最新作がニンテンドー3DSとWii Uの両方をサポートしているのがヒントであるとのこと。
また、Wii版は相当のボリュームがあったスマブラですが、次回作については「単にボリュームを増やしていくだけではいつか限界がやって来る」としており、単純にキャラクターやステージを増やすのではなく、違う部分で付加価値を出していくようです。
