海外のゲーム情報サイトKotakuのインタビューに応じた岩田社長は、両タイトルについて「Newスーパーマリオブラザーズは、1つのプラットフォームにつき1タイトル限り」であるとコメントしました。
同じ年に2Dマリオ作品が2作品リリースされることに関しては「同じ時期に2作品を同時に作ることは（任天堂として）新たな挑戦」とし、また内容に関しては「2作品はとてもユニークで別々の作品」であると改めて説明しました。
また、Newマリオ2でも予定されている有料での追加コンテンツ配信については「消費者を騙したり、消費者が騙されたと感じないようなものにしなければならない」「本編は本編としてきちんと作り、その上で追加コンテンツを提供する」と、従来からの姿勢を改めて表明しました。
